MEANING OF THE NAME
Sawsan is the Arabic word for iris — a flower that has grown in the hills of the Levant for centuries. The black iris is Jordan's national flower, rare and protected.
STORY
The black iris blooms in Jordan's highlands each spring, when the rains come. From a distance, the petals look black. But hold them to the light and they reveal themselves — deep violet, shimmering purple, a color that keeps secrets.
THE DESIGN
The Sawsan is a floor-length embroidered open abaya in black Italian crepe, with purple iris embroidery and hand-set crystal beads on the front panels and sleeves. It is fully lined and comes with a matching black sheila.
Each iris is worked in two tones of purple, deep violet against lilac, with its petal edges traced in violet crystal beads. Olive green stems and blade-shaped leaves are lined with green beads, so the whole design shifts as light moves across it. The blooms gather at the chest and fall down each front opening; at the cuffs, the embroidery wraps the sleeve and the edge is cut to follow the flowers.
Italian crepe gives the piece a heavier hand and a fluid, unhurried drape. The body is fully lined, so nothing shows through. Embroidery is designed in-house and executed with precision. Every bead is set by hand using the Tambour technique.
Designed for Eid, weddings, and any occasion that calls for presence. Sizes S to XXL. The inner dress shown is not included.
